Period Title Project Manager
2011 - 2014 RIDERSCAN Project: Ecodriving – European Scanning Tour for Motorcycle Safety The Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA)

Co-funded by the European Commission, the RIDERSCAN project gathered existing information on motorcycle safety in Europe, identified needs for action and created a cross-border knowledge-based network.

Following the conclusions of the OECD/ITF workshop on motorcycle safety (Lillehammer, 2008) and of the European Motorcyclists' Forum (Brussels, 2010), in the scope of the United Nations' Declaration for a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 (Moscow, 2009), this 3-year project aimed at gathering existing knowledge, identifying needs and disseminating the collected information to relevant stakeholders to promote motorcycle safety throughout Europe.

It reports on areas for European action (legislation, standardization, research and political needs), but also disseminates conclusions to relevant stakeholders at national level. So doing, the project expected to foster a new dynamic among road safety stakeholders by advancing knowledge, enhancing communication and better cooperation between the various areas related to motorcycle safety.

Objectives

  • To gather existing knowledge in all relevant areas of motorcycle safety,
    • on the motorcycling population and means to reach it;
    • motorcycling use and safety characteristics (infrastructure, training, accident reporting and statistics, awareness campaigns, research, traffic management, emergency response, etc.);
    • transport authorities initiatives towards motorcycling;
    • safety needs in 8 motorcycle safety areas (infrastructure, training/education/ testing/licensing, data collection/statistics, accident reporting, research, traffic management, awareness campaigns, national strategies);
  • To identify and report on needs for European action (legislation, standardization, research and communication) in the field of motorcycle safety.
  • To disseminate the collected information and best practices to relevant stakeholders throughout Europe, to relevant stakeholders (press, motorcycling community, transport stakeholders, national governments and parliaments, research community, etc.) at national and EU level.

In doing so, the project also expected to foster a new dynamic among road safety stakeholders by improving knowledge and enhancing communication and cooperation between the various areas related to motorcycle safety.
