Presenter: Giuseppe Marinelli, Associate Professor in “Technology & Mobility” and the leader of TRAFIKKLAB, based within the Road Traffic Division at Nord University, Norway
Over the past three years, NORD University has developed and equipped a dedicated Research and Education Lab – TRAFIKKLAB, where driving simulators play a central role in research and teaching. Through this journey, they have gained valuable experience in selecting, operating, and maintaining simulators to make them effective and productive tools. This webinar will share practical insights and considerations for anyone planning to invest in driving simulators. Rather than providing a universal checklist or market overview, the webinar will focus on key questions and factors that should guide any decision-making process, tailored to specific needs.
Giuseppe will deliver a presentation on simulator parameters and latest research developments at Nord University which will be divided into two parts:
- Adopting Driving Simulators in Research and Education – Lessons Learned from TRAFIKKLAB
A user-centred reflection on key aspects to consider when implementing driving simulators, based on three years of hands-on experience at NORD University
- Research in Simulative Environments – Insights from TRAFIKKLAB at NORD University
An overview of recent research activities and project outcomes using driving simulators within the TRAFIKKLAB framework

- What physical environment is needed for an effective simulator setup?
- Essential hardware components and features (screen size, haptic feedback, motion platforms, VR equipment, etc.)
- Software capabilities to look for
- Human resources and technical competence required
- Budgeting for acquisition, maintenance, and updates
- The role of physical feedback in different applications
